Psychoeducational Assessments
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's cognitive, academic, and socio-emotional functioning.
The goal of a psychoeducational assessment is to provide a clear and accurate understanding of an individual’s strengths and challenges to inform educational planning and support strategies. It helps tailor interventions to meet the individual’s specific needs, ensuring they receive the appropriate resources and accommodations to succeed in their educational journey.
At Seasons Family Centre, we provide psychoeducational assessments for school-aged children and youth as well as adults.
If it was up to us, we would recommend that everyone enter school with a psychoeducational assessment on hand, allowing educators to have a window into each child’s abilities and learning preferences.
In reality, psych-ed assessments are primarily done when there are concerns related to intellectual ability (e.g. struggling with problem solving and learning), academic ability (e.g. challenges in different areas of learning such as reading, writing, or mathematics), behaviour at school or at home, mental health (e.g. anxiety, low mood, poor social skills, etc.), attention/executive functioning, as well as queries of giftedness/higher than expected achievement.
If you have questions as to whether you should have your child / yourself assessed, feel free to email us (hyperlink).
The assessment process includes an intake interview, two assessment sessions of up to 3 hours and one debrief session after the report is completed to go over the results. The turnaround time for reports is 6-8 weeks. Assessment sessions are generally booked close together, but the overall timeline is subject to change based on availability and booking preferences.
No referral is required. Please call or e-mail our office to book.
The cost of the assessment is $3,000. This is the bundle price; if more sessions are needed to complete the assessment, you will not pay more.
Core components of a psychoeducational assessment include:
This assesses intellectual functioning, including problem-solving abilities, memory, attention, and reasoning skills.
This evaluates an individual’s academic skills in areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, and other relevant subjects. It identifies specific areas of academic strength and areas where additional assistance may be needed.
This component assesses emotional well-being, social and behavioural functioning. For example, it may help parents and caregivers understand how their child’s emotional functioning, such as anxiety about academic performance is impacting their learning, and/or their behaviour while at school or at home.
These are generally selected on an individual basis dependent on the clinical question, and may be done through interviews, questionnaires, in-class or in-office observations.
