Perinatal Mental Health

Navigating the journey to parenthood can be a profound and complex experience, marked by a wide array of emotional and psychological changes.

Perinatal mental health encompasses the emotional and psychological well-being of parents during pregnancy and the postpartum period. At Seasons Family Centre, our perinatal mental health services are designed to support both prospective and new parents through this transformative season of life.

Understanding the various realms of perinatal mental health is crucial for recognizing when to seek support and how it can benefit you and your family. It’s normal to experience a range of emotions during this time, but sometimes these feelings can become overwhelming. Perinatal mental health concerns are more common than many realize, affecting up to 1 in 5 new parents.

Understanding Perinatal Mental Health

The journey into parenthood is a profound and transformative experience, filled with moments of joy, wonder, and sometimes, unexpected challenges. It’s important to recognize that many new parents experience a range of emotions and struggles that are legitimate and shared by others, yet shouldn’t be dismissed as simply ‘normal’ or something to endure without support.

Postpartum anxiety and depression, for instance, touch the lives of many families, bringing feelings of persistent sadness, worry, or exhaustion that can make daily life and bonding with your little one feel overwhelming. For some, the birth experience itself may leave lasting emotional imprints, creating a need for gentle healing and understanding. As you step into your new role as a parent, you might find yourself navigating a shifting sense of identity, trying to reconcile who you were with who you’re becoming – a beautiful evolution that can nonetheless feel disorienting at times.

And in the midst of all this change, your relationship with your partner may face new pressures and adjustments. Remember, these experiences are all part of the complex tapestry of parenthood, and seeking support as you navigate them is a sign of strength and love for your family. You’re not alone in this journey, and there’s no shame in reaching out for help as you grow into your new role.

Recognizing when to seek support

Every parent’s journey is unique, but there are some signs that may indicate it’s time to reach out for support. These can include persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety, difficulty sleeping (even when your baby is sleeping), intrusive thoughts, or feeling disconnected from your baby or partner. If you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing is “normal,” trust your instincts.

Helping dads thrive in parenthood

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) don’t only affect mothers; an estimated 10-20% of fathers experience depression or anxiety during their partner’s pregnancy or after birth, especially if their partner is also struggling. For fathers, this period can be complicated by factors like witnessing birth trauma, work/life balance, relationship changes, fatigue, and health concerns. Many dads also feel low confidence as new parents, adding to these challenges.

In fathers, depression and anxiety often show as “masked” symptoms like irritability, restlessness, low impulse control, or burnout rather than sadness. They may experience trouble with everyday decisions, sleep issues, or emotional withdrawal, making it harder to recognize their need for support.

Seeking help is a crucial step toward healing and resilience, not a sign of weakness. At Seasons Family Centre, we offer counseling designed to help fathers manage stress, process emotions, and feel empowered as parents. Fathers’ mental health matters—we provide a compassionate space for them to feel seen, supported, and ready to navigate parenthood.

Perinatal challenges affect non-birthing partners of all identities, not just fathers. We are here to support
every parent through this transformative journey, honouring the diverse roles within each family.
